Quick fixes for troublesome electronic devices have traditionally involved abusing it somehow. This meant shaking, rapping, hitting, or kicking the device to make it work again. Creating An HTML Page Using On A Dreamweaver CSS Layout

Cascading style sheets (CSS) is a far more complex technology than HTML and using CSS to control the layout of your pages requires experience. Fortunately, Dreamweaver offers a wide variety of CSS layouts which you can use to create both individual pages and also templates which can then be used to generate multiple pages.

To use Dreamweaver's CSS layouts, simply choose New from the File menu. The New Document window shows you all the different types of web page that Dreamweaver is capable of creating. These are arranged in categories and the preset CSS layouts are available both in the Blank Page and Blank Template categories.

If the option "None" is chosen in the Layout column, no CSS file will be created; Dreamweaver will simply create a blank HTML or XHTML page. Clicking on the name of each of the layouts displays a preview on the right. This gives you an idea of what the layout will look like. There are single column, two column and three column layouts available. These layouts use terms that you may find confusing such as elastic, fixed liquid and hybrid. We will come back to these terms in another tutorial. At the moment, we are just concerned with creating an HTML page which is driven by a CSS file.

Having chosen a CSS layout, before clicking on the "Create" button you need to specify the manner in which the CSS code will be linked to the HTML document. Next to the option labelled "Layout CSS" is a drop-down menu containing three options: "Add to Head" will place all of the CSS code inside the HTML document in the head section; as the name suggests, "Add to New File", will create a new external CSS file containing all the necessary code; "Link to Existing File" will put the CSS code in an existing CSS file you designate. The final option is useful if you are adding the page to an existing site that already has a CSS file which you want to continue using.

As a general rule, it is almost always preferable to place the CSS in an external file since this offers you more flexibility in reusing the CSS rules contained in the file. If you don't have an existing CSS file, simply choose "Create New File" and then click the Create button. Dreamweaver will prompt you to select a location for the CSS file and will suggest a condensed, abbreviated name, such as " twoColElsLtHdr.css". Feel free to enter a different name. Excel 2007 Navigation Techniques

Each Excel document is referred to as a workbook and each workbook can contain up to 255 worksheets. To activate a particular worksheet, click on one of the tabs displayed at the bottom of your screen.

To the left of the worksheet tabs will find four navigation icons. These are useful where you have a workbook that either contains lots of worksheets or has worksheets with very long names. The very first icon makes the name of the first worksheet visible; the very last icon makes the name of the last worksheet visible. The left pointing arrow reveals the name of the previous worksheet and of course the right pointing arrow reveals the name of the next worksheet. These icons do not actually activate a worksheet; they simply make its name tab visible. To activate a worksheet, you still have to click on that particular tab.

Worksheets can also be activated using the keyboard. To activate the next worksheet to the right, hold down Control and press the Page Down key. This moves you forward through the worksheets are naturally holding Control and pressing Page Up moves you back to the left.

Once you have navigated to a particular worksheet, you will need to go to a particular cell or a particular section of that worksheet. Firstly, you can use the scroll bars to make different parts of the worksheet visible. Secondly, you can move around the worksheet using the arrows on your keyboard: down, right, up and left.

Excel also contains useful keyboard shortcuts for moving to the edges of a given body of data. To get to the right-most cell of the current range, hold down Control and press the right arrow and of course to get to the bottom cell, hold down Control and press the down arrow.

It's also possible to do exactly the same thing using the mouse. Position the cursor on one of the edges of the selection rectangle (the bold highlight which is displayed around the currently active cell) and then simply double-click. Double-clicking on the right hand edge of the selection rectangle moves you to the extreme right of the current range. Double-clicking on the bottom edge moves the cursor to the bottom of the range, and so forth.

There are two final navigation key combination which should be mentioned: Control-Home and Control-End. Hold down the Control key and press the End key to move to the bottom right of the current range. Hold down Control and press Home to move to the top left of the current range.

As well as navigating through the worksheets, all users of Excel make frequent use of the Ribbon. Excel offers a series of useful keyboard shortcuts when working with the Ribbon.

To access the ribbon keyboard shortcuts simply press the Alt key once on your keyboard. A series of badges are then displayed which represent the letters or numbers that you should type to activate that part of the Ribbon. For example, "W" is the shortcut for accessing the View Tab.

When you press "W" and the View Tab becomes active, another series of badges is displayed on each of the commands within the View Tab. For example, the "Arrange All" command has "A" as its keyboard shortcut, so simply typing "A" is equivalent to clicking the Arrange All button.

Once you've typed a letter to execute a command, the Ribbon loses focus and the shortcut badges disappear. To access Ribbon commands via the keyboard once more, simply press the Alt Key and the badges will reappear. This means that you never have to worry about learning keyboard shortcuts. All you have to remember is to press the Alt key on your keyboard and Excel will prompt you from there.

Microsoft Word 2007 File Formats

Microsoft Word 2007 is capable of working with files in three formats. The native format uses the file extension ".docx". Files saved in this format can use the full range of features found in Word 2007, with the exception of macros. Any Word 2007 file which contains macros must be saved in a separate file format using the file extension ".docm".

In addition to these two native formats, Word 2007 is also capable of both opening and creating documents using the ".doc" file extension, the file extension found in previous versions of Word. Word 2007 files saved with this file extension will not have access to the full range of features found with in Word 2007. Features which have been introduced in 2007, such as Themes, will not be available in documents saved with the file extension ".doc".

When you save a Word 2007 document for the first-time, these three options are available in a drop-down menu labeled "Save As Type". Unless you specify otherwise, the new file will be saved with the file extension ".docx". However, if you find yourself exchanging documents with a person using an older version of Word, you can save the document using the file extension ".doc", which is backward compatible.

When you open any document containing a macro, by default, Word displays a security message notifying you that macros have been disabled. You can then, optionally, click on Options and enable the content if we want to.

Whenever you open a file created in a previous version of Microsoft Word, Word 2007 doesn't automatically convert the file to its new format. For convenience, it leaves it in the ".doc" format and goes into a special working mode called "Compatibility Mode". (It even displays the words "Compatibility Mode" in brackets next to the document title.)

When a file is in compatibility mode, you can still continue working on it. You can make changes to the file and you can save those changes. The document will remain in the old format and remain in compatibility mode. However, some features, such as Themes, will not be activated when working in compatibility mode. If you position the mouse over the Themes section of the Page Layout Tab of the Word Ribbon, a tool tip appears telling you: "This document has been opened in compatibility mode. To use this feature convert your document to a new file format. Click on the Office button and then click convert." If you take this advice, "Compatibility Mode" disappears from the title bar and when you save the file Word changes the file extension and the document will have been fully converted into the Word 2007 format.

If you find yourself in an environment where both Word 2007 and older versions are in use, Microsoft has provided another solution. It is possible to install an update called the Office Compatibility Pack. This makes it possible for older versions of all the Microsoft Office packages to open the new file formats.
